The AHSAA Central Board recently approved a new classification system for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 cycles that separates postseason competition for public and private schools. Under this restructuring, public schools compete in six classes (1A-6A), while private schools compete in two separate classes (Private Single A and Private Double A) for state championships and playoffs. Despite this postseason split, public and private schools continue to compete against each other during the regular season under the unified AHSAA umbrella.

The changes eliminate the 1.35 competitive multiplier and other balance factors historically applied to private schools, instead classifying all schools strictly on enrollment. Importantly, in response to private school concerns, the AHSAA has clarified that financial assistance — including Choose Act funds, the Accountability Act, tuition assistance, and similar scholarships — will no longer affect athletic eligibility; such financial aid will not be a barrier to student participation under the new model.

These adjustments aim to create more equitable playoff structures while preserving regular-season competition across all member schools.
